OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning)

" OPAL’s mission is to ensure that every school child enjoys an amazing playtime every single day – no exceptions!”

What is OPAL?
Did you know that children spend around 20% of their school day playing? That’s a huge opportunity for learning, imagination and joy! To make sure this precious time and that our fantastic school grounds are used to their full potential, our school has proudly embraced the OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) approach.
OPAL gives children the freedom to explore, invent and play in ways that feel natural and exciting to them. Using found, recycled, and natural resources, children are encouraged to follow their curiosity, spark their creativity, and transform the outdoors into a place full of adventure and possibility.
An OPAL approach creates a fully inclusive play environment, where every child feels comfortable to express themselves, take risks, try new ideas and play in ways that suit them best. Our OPAL journey began in Autumn 2024 and since then, our outdoor spaces have been completely transformed into dynamic, ever-changing play environments.
The excitement is clear to see! Children love the wide variety of outdoor opportunities OPAL offers, whatever the weather. From rolling tyres and digging deep in the sandpit, to imaginative adventures in the small world area or cooking up creative masterpieces in the mud kitchen, OPAL provides engaging and adventurous alternatives to traditional playground activities. There is always something new to explore, create or discover.
Through OPAL play, children are not only more active during break and lunchtime, but they are also developing essential life skills. Collaboration, teamwork, communication, and problem-solving happen naturally as children build, negotiate, design and explore together. Every day, we see motivated and enthusiastic builders, engineers, explorers, and designers, learning through play and having an amazing time while doing it!
OPAL is more than play -it’s where confidence grows, friendships flourish, and imagination knows no limits.

Our Story So Far…
At the heart of everything we do is our belief that play is powerful. Through play, children are given the chance to develop each aspect of our learner profile: community, curiosity, creativity, and confidence—and our outdoor spaces have been designed to bring these values to life every single day.
From the very beginning, outdoor play has been full of curiosity and adventure. When we noticed children eagerly digging all around the play area, we embraced their enthusiasm and introduced a dedicated digging zone. It quickly became a favourite place to get muddy, explore, and experiment boosting both curiosity and confidence as children investigated the world beneath their feet. This excitement flowed naturally into the mud kitchen where old pots, pans and cake tins were given a second lease of life. Here, creativity flourished as children mixed, stirred and collaborated to invent an endless array of imaginative concoctions together, strengthening their sense of community.
To balance the energy, we added a sail to our memorial garden, transforming it into a calm and welcoming retreat. This peaceful space supports creativity and confidence, offering children the opportunity to craft, draw, read and enjoy quiet moments either independently or with friends. In contrast, our dressing-up zone, music zone and dance area are filled with movement, laughter and song. These high-energy spaces encourage confidence and community as children perform, collaborate, and express themselves freely.
More recently, sandpits have been introduced, delighting children of all ages as they dig, build sandcastles, and explore textures and shapes. This open-ended play sparks curiosity and creativity while naturally encouraging cooperation and shared play.
Our den-building area has been a huge success across all year groups. With crates, pallets and tarpaulins, children work together to plan, design, and construct a wide range of exciting structures. This area perfectly captures all four C’s—curiosity in problem-solving, creativity in design, confidence in decision-making and community through teamwork.
Our newest zones focus on movement and freedom, offering wheeled areas and pulling tasks that allow children to explore the school grounds in new and adventurous ways. These spaces build physical confidence while encouraging independence, collaboration and joyful exploration.
Through every zone and experience, play remains the key that unlocks our Four C’s—and this is just the beginning of our journey.

Looking Ahead: Our OPAL Journey Continues
OPAL is an ever‑changing and constantly developing part of our school, growing alongside our children. Our journey doesn’t stop here. As we move into our temporary accommodation and look ahead to our exciting new school build, OPAL will continue to evolve, adapt and flourish.
We are excited to be planning the next steps of our outdoor play adventure, with new areas designed to enrich play and further develop our Four C’s: confidence, curiosity, creativity, and community.

What’s Coming Next?
We hope to introduce the following new features very soon:
•A water zone: a rich sensory space where curiosity leads the way as children experiment, pour, splash, and explore. This area will inspire creativity through open‑ended play, while building confidence as children test ideas and problem‑solve together.
•An expanded large games area – encouraging teamwork, cooperation, and a strong sense of community as children play, compete, collaborate and cheer each other on.
•A reflection area – a calm and thoughtful space where children can pause, chat, and reflect. This area will support confidence, emotional awareness, and meaningful social connections.
•Increased movement opportunities – offering children freedom, choice, and challenge as they move in different ways. These experiences build physical confidence, fuel curiosity and encourage joyful shared play.
Each new zone will be designed to give children the freedom to explore, imagine and connect, ensuring that all four C’s are woven naturally into every play experience.

Our Goal
Our goal is simple but powerful: every child, regardless of age, should have the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive through play and to truly enjoy every playtime. Through OPAL, we aim to give our children an enriched childhood filled with laughter, friendship, exploration and confidence.
We hope you’ll join us on this exciting journey as we continue to create an outdoor environment where play matters, childhood is celebrated and every child has the chance to shine.

OPAL Ambassadors
Children within school have the opportunity to develop their leadership skills and become an OPAL ambassador. They support in developing and supporting zones during play times.
