Boarding at Polam Hall
Polam Hall School is a state boarding school with facilities for up to 25 boys and girls from Year 7 upwards. We are able to offer places to any UK or EEA passport holder.
Our boarding school received a 'Good' overall judgement following an inspection by Ofsted in May 2019.Click here to read our boarding school Ofsted report
We offer a friendly, boarding experience with accommodation in traditional family-style houses. There are no large, impersonal dormitories and students are able to socialise with house ‘siblings’ in different year groups, just as they would in normal family life.
Polam Hall sits in 20 acres of glorious landscaped grounds and yet it is only five minutes from a main line rail station and less than 2 miles to the nearest motorway link. We are 15 minutes from Durham Tees Valley airport, and just an hour from Leeds Bradford or Newcastle airports. Our school is in Darlington town centre within easy walking distance of a large swimming pool, sports centre and gymnasium, shopping, cinema and restaurants so there is plenty for our boarders to do, either independently for the older ones, or in organised supervised groups for the younger children.
We are spoilt for choice when it comes to outdoor activities and heritage – and we certainly make the most of this when organising weekend excursions for boarders. Although we are technically in County Durham, we are just a short drive away from the beautiful Yorkshire Dales and are close to the North Yorkshire heritage coastline and the historic university cities of Durham and York.
The aim at Polam Hall is to provide a live-in experience that is positive and fulfilling for every boarder. We keep a close eye on their well-being as well as their academic progress and have experienced staff who provide a nurturing and supportive environment where children feel at home.
A welcome from our Head of Boarding, Mr David Brown
‘Ultimately, it is our aim to help our boarders to ‘grow in harmony’ and to support their development into happy, confident and successful young adults. Each boarding house is staffed by house parents who not only carry out the day-to-day practical duties of running a boarding house, they also act as leaders, mentors and confidants. The ratio of staff to boarders is exceptionally high which further reinforces the sense of family.
Unlike many state boarding schools, Polam Hall also has the benefit of having teaching staff closely involved in pastoral care for boarders. This is important, as the teachers appreciate the pressures of schoolwork and exams and they are the ones best placed to get the most out of each child.
All boarders are involved in electing our Boarding Council which ensures that everyone’s voice is heard. A Head Boarder, Deputies, and Heads and Deputies of our two competitive Boarding Houses – Peace and Harmony – are elected each year and help to organise inter-house competitions and team building events.’
