Hannah Kerr – Strategic Policy Advisor, NZ Gov’t

When were you at Polam?

1992 – 1999

What did you study at Polam?

Maths, Further Maths, French, English Literature, General Studies

What are you doing today?

I am a Senior Strategic Policy Advisor at the New Zealand Ministry of Health in Wellington. Providing the New Zealand Minister for Health with advice on the medium to long-term strategic direction of the New Zealand health service. This includes conducting research, developing and analysing policy options, providing the Minister with written and oral briefing, designing communication and stakeholder management strategies and planning the implementation of new initiatives.

How did Polam help you to get there?

Polam provided a great springboard into the wider world. The quality of the teaching laid the foundations for many of the skills that have equipped me well in my career, and the supportive atmosphere created by caring, engaged staff gave me the self-belief to continually challenge and push myself to achieve.

What’s your best memory of Polam?

Either Sixth Form, sharing a study room in Plantation with a great group of friends, or anything involving the music department, where I seemed to spend most of my ‘free’ time!

Who was you favourite teacher?

One of two. Miss Rumney, who taught me French up to GCSE and who made the lessons so much fun that I always looked forward to them, or Mrs Sleightholme, a wonderful music teacher and choir and orchestra conductor, who was completely dedicated to the music department.
