Mrs Carole Johnson

Carole recently left Polam Hall School after working in the role of Finance and Operations Director during the transition from a Private to a Free School. After reading law at Oxford University , she has spent 30 years working in both the private and public sectors including 10 years in the British Diplomatic Service. She originally qualified as a Chartered Accountant with Ernst and Young, before spending 12 years in professional training and development for solicitors and accountants. She is trained in workplace mediation and grievance investigation.

A six year spell living in Singapore sparked Carole’s interest in diplomacy after she took the role of Political Director at the British High Commission in Singapore. After joining the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Carole served in Lisbon, Malta and Washington DC as well as holding roles in London. She was awarded and MVO during the State Visit of HM  The Queen to Singapore, and received an MBE for her co-ordination of the evacuation of British Citizens from Libya in 2011, when serving as Deputy Commissioner to Malta.

Carole served as a Governor at a primary school in Balham, South London in the late 1980’s, and has also worked as a treasurer for Riding for the Disabled in Singapore. She chaired the National Society of Student Accountants when working in London. The daughter of two state school teachers (her father was a school headmaster for 20 years), she has always had an interest in education. After  two and a half years working with Polam Hall School, she is familiar with it’s recent history and transitions. She is married, lives in Darlington, and has two grown-up children.
